Abstract

The purpose of the decriptive correlational study was to identify the relationship between health promotion behavior and self-esteem, general characteristics for 145 clinical nurses working at a general hospital.
The tool used for the study was a structured questionnare which consisted of 6 items related to general characteristics, 10 items on self-esteem measurement 40 items on health promotion lifestyle profile.
The collected data was analyzed using SAS, yielding frequencies, percentiles, means, standard deviations, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Cronbach's alpha.

@EN 1. Most of subjects were staff nurses. (84.1%)
The years of job experiences of subjects showed even distribution from ane year to more than ten years.
2. The mean score of self-esteem was 2.88.
3. The mean score of performance of the health promotion behavior was 2.62.
Comparing of the order of the scores among 6 subscales of the promotion behavior, the highest score was for self-actualization, the n interpersonal support, nutrition, stress management, health responsibility, and exercise in that order.
4. Health promotion behavior has a statistically significant correlation with self-esteem, while no correlation with a general characteristics.
On the basis of the results of this study, the future direction of related research should include other health professionals, develop measurement tools, and consider other variables.
Nurses should be considered not only as a health promotor, but also an individual in need of health promotion.
